New Plan to Hike Tolls in New Jersey

TRENTON, NJ (AP)  -- Commuters who drive the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway are facing higher tolls.

LISTEN: Driver Reaction from Ridgefield Park

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority's board has told Gov. Jon S. Corzine it will raise tolls by 50 percent starting in 2009.

Parkway tolls would climb from 35 cents to 50 cents in 2009, 75 cents in 2012 and 85 cents in 2023.

Drivers who now pay on average $1.20 on the turnpike would pay $1.80 next year, $2.70 in 2012 and $3 in 2023.

The authority tells Corzine the increases are an action of last resort that are needed to meet financial obligations and to pay for road improvements.

Turnpike tolls have not risen since 2000. The last parkway increase was in 1989.
