Reports: Mayor Bloomberg to Seek Third Term

NEW YORK (WCBS 880)  -- According to The New York Times, Mayor Bloomberg will seek a third term as mayor.

WCBS Reporter Rich Lamb is working the story and will get us the latest.

Currently there is a two-term limit for the office of mayor, Bloomberg will see to overturn that rule.

The City Comptroller Bill Thompson joined us live a few moments ago and said he does not support revising the two-term limit law.

"I will be very disappointed if the Mayor attempts to do this to the legislation of the City Council.  He will undermine the will of the voters, who under two occasions have said they believe in term limits. Any change to that law should go back to the public," said Thompson.

Tompson is rumored to be one of the potential candidates for Mayor in 2009.

Stay with WCBS on air and online for any updates.

term limits - yes
Term limits were implemented prior to Mr. Bloomberg's election. He should play by the rules. Therefore, no change to the Term Limits laws are necessary. It's time for Mr. Bloomberg to abide by the LAW, as it's presently written, and relinquish the office after the next election.

Concerned Citizen
Bloomberg didn't want Giuliani around after his 2nd term was up, didn't support a movement to extend Giuliani's term in the wake of 9/11.

A Great Idea for NYC
"Nobody does it better"..in this financial turmoil NYC needs his experience. The term limits issue should be put up for a vote Nov 2008 and see what the people want to do. Sorry Rudy.

Bloom's a charm
I think the city can only benfit from Bloomburg's fiscal savy in the Wall St driven budget shortfalls that lurk just around the corner.

mike B again...let's hope not
No, his financial savvy didn't keep the City from it's Wall Street wreck. He has agitated for financial office buildings at the old WTC site, which now have no tennants. Even for those who would like him to have a third term, we shouldn't end term limits because of any one candidate. It should be decided based on general principal. Bloomberg runs the City government like a king, His dictates have kept the WTC workers from getting a healthcare package. He has no soul and thinks only in terms of money. We can't afford him again...not in terms of human decency.

Supply a detailed report card
Even more than Mayor Bloomberg, I detest the City Council members who are hanging back waiting on his coat tails to keep themselves in office. If New York City%u2019s elected officials want to lift %u201Cterm limits,%u201D and the City Council might follow the Mayor and make the decision to vote for such a measure, then it is only fair for the public to expect a report from all of the council members, including answers to the following: Are you for, against or not certain about term limits? Why? If you couldn%u2019t complete your tasks and reach your goals in eight years, what makes you think you would in another four? What are your incomplete goals and tasks? We%u2019re told that a new councilmember%u2019s first term is spent %u201Cgetting to know the ropes.%u201D Why so long? How many years did it take you to complete high school and college? Provide a list, and status, of the original bills that you conceived and introduced during the past four years. Provide a list, and status, of bills your constituents proposed to you during the past four years. Do you have another job? How many hours per week do you average at it, and how many hours per week do you average at the Council post? Who are the civic leaders and groups in your district? How often do you personally meet or speak with them? What are the main concerns of the people in your district? Provide details about your appointees to the Community Board(s): their other civic involvement; do they belong to a political club; how long have you known them; how were they suggested for the position; what is their attendance record; how long have they served on the board; have they contributed to your campaigns? Provide a list of all donors, and amounts, to your most recent campaign (or %u201Cwar chest%u201D or PAC or family member). Provide a list of all the %u201Cmember items%u201D you have funded during the past four years. Provide a list of the zoning variances or permits you have supported the past four years, along with the names of the properties%u2019 owners, developers, architects, engineers, attorneys and contractors. Professional coaches often get incredible contracts, with the expectation they%u2019ll produce winning teams. Sometimes they%u2019ll even say, %u201CI%u2019ve outlined a 3-5 year plan for reaching the championship.%u201D But, you certainly won%u2019t hear, %u201CI%u2019ve a 12 year plan.%u201D In business, chief executives won%u2019t see their contracts extended unless they show progress and profits. Meantime, NYC City Councilman Oliver Koppell was quoted as saying that term limits "cuts off people's careers in politics." How did he ever come to believe that guaranteed long-time employment is the purpose of these elected posts? Council members who work for their clubhouses or donors or real estate developers, rather than for the people, deserve to be out of office. Public service is not self service. Extendiong term limits is the City Hall equivalent of Wall Street's "golden parachute" Ed Jaworski, Executive Vice President Madison-Marine-Homecrest Civic Association Brooklyn, NY

Yes, this time.
He has proven to be aggressively non-partisan. He has shown he will try to do things for the right reasons, rather than the right interests. He is shown himself to be honest and straight. I cannot view him as a politician in the same mold as any mayor I have known before. Let him run. If the people are offended, they can vote against him.
09/30/2008 5:24PM
Support Bloomberg's Third Term
Mayor Bloomberg has my vote for a third term. And, I am a Democrat, who voted for Mayor Bloomberg and will continue to give him my vote.
09/30/2008 6:13PM
Term Limits were set via votes, should be banned via votes
Term limits were set by votes from the public, therefore it term litmits want to be banned, then it should be removed the same way. Otherwise it looks at like he can change what ever he wants. If it was something that needed immediate implementation, then I can see, but this is simply to serve his purpose, & I hope if he gets his way, he will get bit in the foot for trying not to do it fairly
09/30/2008 6:26PM
Go for it!
I would love to see him run again. I wish he would run for president.
09/30/2008 6:41PM
Don't know!
Tell us why he would seek a third term?
09/30/2008 7:56PM
NY needs Mike
Mike looks out for NY's best interests, not like most politicians. We need him now more than ever
09/30/2008 9:23PM
Let the voters decide
Bloomberg has shown extreme fiscal responsibility through some very challenging times. Maybe he can shut down those crooks in the City Council with their 'slush funds' and fake community organizations.
09/30/2008 9:58PM
MODERATE
We have term limits... they are called elections. The will of the voters will be respected on election day. I say let the Mayor run. He's done a good job and we DONT need a politician running--we need a person like Bloomberg. If the people want him, they will vote for him. If they don't they will vote for someone else.
10/01/2008 8:23AM
Enough is enough
Bloomberg is part and parcel of the Wall Street greed and indifference. He is a dictator and should not run again.
10/01/2008 3:04PM
look at the bright side
If re-elected, his righteous policing of those pesky Indian cigarette sellers will bring NYC approximately 195M in 'lost' cigarette revenues. Why he's a modern day Robin Hood!
10/12/2008 8:02AM
Why????????
Let move on to the next.
10/12/2008 8:07AM
Third Term Think Not
What has he done so great that he should run a third term? Let someone else do the job. Why should our children see that if you say one thing then you can change your mind at the end of the game. NO NO NO, NO more Bloomberg
10/12/2008 8:38AM
What's The Point?
What's the point of voting if they could and would change the rules. I do not understand..........
09/30/2008 3:08PM
Would You Support Bloomberg's Third Term Run?
What do you think of Bloomberg reportedly seeking a third term?
