Stewart Lewis
|
Stewart Lewis began his career in the living room of his parents home, when at a mere age of five he was thrown a tambourine. His parents moonlighted in a bluegrass band and there was always four part harmony around the fire among sleeping labradors. After playing along with The Who on drums, Stewart picked up the guitar, and started writing songs at age thirteen. At the time his Dad was a music lawyer, taking him to smoky clubs to see his clients Big Sixteen (who eventually became Morphine) and The Joe Perry Project (Aerosmith). In short, Stewart’s musical tastes evolved at a rapid pace.
At the University of Colorado in Boulder, Stewart directed plays and starred in the main stage production of Pippin. At the time, his band Acoustic Junction was becoming a college jam band phenomenon, opening for Blues Traveler and The Band among others. After graduating college, Stewart left the band to pursue acting in New York. After a short stint on CBS’s Guiding Light, Stewart decided to move back to Colorado and pursue a solo singer-songwriting career. In 1992 he released Faces in the Crowd, and his powerful stage presence and performance earned him the opportunity to open for such major artists as Shawn Colvin, Ani Difranco, Paula Cole, Sheryl Crow, and many others. He traveled the world and performed in such exotic places as Capetown, Hong Kong, New Zealand, as well as several sold out shows in London.
Being a fan of short stories since college, he decided to expand the arc of his career and moved to Los Angeles to get his Masters at USC in their prestigious writing program, where he studied with the likes of Hubert Selby Jr. and John Rechy. During his time at graduate school, he passed a CD to an industry insider at the famous Il Sole restaurant on Sunset boulevard. Two days later the man came to his show with his associates and Stewart won them over, and they offered him a management deal on the spot. A few weeks later Stewart was performing for VP’s of record labels in their offices. It is the sometimes harrowing yet celebrity studded, glamorous experience with this management company that inspired Stewart to write Rockstarlet, his debut semi-autobigraphical novel. Two years later his second novel Relative Stranger was published, lauded by best-selling author Augusten Burroughs as “A droll, spirited read—terrific fun.”
Currently, Stewart Lewis is living in New York City where in addition to working on his third novel, he continues to perform and license his songs, which have appeared on Dawson’s Creek, Joan of Arcadia, Party of Five, Beautiful People, and MTV’s Laguna Beach.
He is also thrilled to now be a part of the WCBS radio family, doing thrice-weekly reports on “City Life” in Manhattan and the five burroughs.
