MRSA Outbreak Infects 7 Newborns

NEW YORK (WCBS 880)  -- The maternity ward at St. John's Riverside Hospital has been thoroughly cleaned after seven newborn babies and four employees were diagnosed with MRSA.

"We are assuming that all seven cases are connected," said Jim Foy, St. John's Riverside Hospital President and CEO. "The strain seems to be community acquired. It is a localized skin infection but again, any infection that comes from a hospital is something you're concerned with. You're supposed to get better when you come to a hospital, not have anything come and make it worse."

Along with cleaning, the hospital has also restricted the number of visitors patients can have  and limited the visiting hours.

According the News 12, Infectious Disease Chief Peter Berkey says that the infected children do not have fatal cases of MRSA and are being effectively treated with antibiotics.
