The team is moving across the street to a new home next spring.

On Saturday, Bronx youth groups and members of the Yankees' 1998 championship team will dig up dirt from the original stadium's home plate area and pitcher's mound and take it to the new ballpark.

The team is holding ceremonies at each stadium Saturday to mark the transfer.

WCBS Reporter Sophia Hall was there today with players and students from the Bronx as they transported Yankee Stadium dirt to its new home.

This was a day for memories, for Bill, he remembered his first Yankees game back in 1952. He spoke of witnessing the late Micky Mantel hit a home run.

Former players along with students from the Bronx picked up shovelss and removed dirt from the old stadium, walked next door to the new stadium and placed the dirt on the ground.

An emotional 17 year old said, "It's great to be here, it's really nice."

Former player Scott Brosius got in on the action and got some dirt on his shoes. "I am never going to clean my shoes off again," he said.

Another former player David Cone, had high hopes for the new stadium. "I really hope that the mystique and the aura that have been in this place so long, really follow us over there," he said.

There may not have been any homeruns or cheering fans in the stands, but it was all about the old and the new, and the dirt.
