Upstate Town To Kill Geese
|
SCOTIA, NEW YORK (AP) -- Wildlife experts will trap and kill about 150 Canada Geese in a town park near the Mohawk River next month.
It's the latest tactic in a battle the village of Scotia has been waging for years against the large flocks of geese that nest on an island in Collins Lake and soil the lakeside lawns and beach with their droppings and feathers.
Critics are horrified that the village is killing the birds rather than using non-lethal methods to scare them off, such as harrassing them with dogs. But officials say they have looked into the alternatives and determined that they wouldn't solve the problem.
The village has been destroying goose eggs for several years in an attempt to reduce the population.
The lake's sandy beach was closed last July after high levels of bacteria were found in the water. The likely source was goose droppings.
