Italy Grounds Pope's Helicopters after Crash in France
|
ROME (AP) -- Italy has grounded the helicopters it uses to carry Pope Benedict, after a similar aircraft crashed in France last month.
An investigation of the October 23 incident, in which eight people aboard were killed, shows that a blade of the Sikorsky helicopter's main rotor broke off.
The air force says that until it becomes clear why the rotor blade broke off, its 35 HH-3F models will remain grounded, along with its two SH-3D helicopters. They have similar rotors and are used by the pope for short trips within Italy.
