Unemployed Postal Worker Arrested for Burning Flag

BERGENFIELD, NJ (AP)  -- Bergenfield police are accusing an unemployed postal worker with burning an American flag on Veterans Day.

Terrence Byrnes is charged with criminal mischief.

Burning the flag is not a crime, but police say the 37-year-old destroyed someone else's property.

Police say Byrnes lit a bamboo shoot and ignited the tattered flag at a former auto dealership on S. Washington Avenue.

Police say Byrnes told them he felt it was 'dishonorable' to display such a weather-beaten flag.

Byrnes is scheduled to appear in Bergenfield Municipal Court on Nov. 20.
