WASHINGTON (AP) -- One of the nation's most high-profile federal prosecutors, Michael Garcia, has told superiors at the Justice Department that he is leaving the New York post to join a private law firm.
As the U.S. attorney for the Southern District, Garcia oversaw the prostitution investigation that led to the resignation of New York's Gov. Eliot Spitzer. He also has a big role in probes of Wall Street. His departure was expected, since the incoming Barack Obama administration will nominate a replacement next year.
Garcia has now informed Justice Department officials in Washington that he will soon leave the position. A a person briefed on the matter spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the announcement is not yet official.
