New York Governor Paterson: Lawmakers' Inaction Embarrassing
|
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Gov. David Paterson says the New York Legislature's inaction so far on essential spending cuts is embarrassing and more than irresponsible.
In a brief news conference, the Democrat says the Republican-led Senate and Democrat-led Assembly haven't yet agreed to any spending cuts ahead of Tuesday's emergency economic session.
He says that will boost the deficit he's projecting for the 2009-2010 fiscal year from $12.5 billion to $15 billion.
Albany's powerful special interests, including teachers' unions and other public employee unions, have fought Paterson's proposed cuts.
Paterson blames years of overspending by state government, exacerbated by Wall Street's meltdown, for the fiscal crisis that includes a projected $2 billion deficit this fiscal year.
