Sex Offender Arrested for Escaping
|
HARTFORD, CT (AP) -- A convicted sex offender has been charged with escaping from a Hartford residential facility while serving probation for his previous crimes.
State prosecutors said 51-year-old Thomas J. Murphy III, a former Waterbury resident, was charged Tuesday with escape from custody. It is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Murphy was released from prison on probation in 2002 after serving time for his 1996 conviction for first-degree sexual assault and tampering with a witness.
He was sent back to prison for violating that probation. Prosecutors also presented evidence that he had plotted to kill the judge, prosecutor and victim in the sexual assault case.
Authorities say Murphy escaped Aug. 18, and was caught three days later in Waterbury by probation officers.
