Teenager Gets 30-Day Sentence for Causing Car Crash That Killed Three People
RIVERHEAD, NY (AP) -- A Long Island teenager has been sentenced to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to reckless driving in a crash that killed three other teens.
Suffolk County Judge C. Randall Hinrichs ordered Steven Badke (Bad-KEY') to begin serving his sentence immediately. The 18-year-old was placed in handcuffs following a sentencing hearing Wednesday as relatives of the victims watched.
Badke was accused of driving more than 80 mph when he veered into oncoming traffic and crashed his father's car into a minivan last Halloween. Two of his teenage passengers and a 13-year-old in the van were killed.
The judge dismissed criminally negligent homicide and assault charges against Badke at a September hearing. He said Badke's behavior was not criminal.
Badke's attorney said the teenager is ``extremely remorseful.''
