New York City Fire Department Cutting Back
|
NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City's fire commissioner says hiring and training will be reduced, and four companies will be closed overnight, due to the financial crisis.
Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta says probationary firefighter training will be five weeks shorter. It's currently 23 weeks.
The Fire Department is trying to trim more than $60 million from its budget.
It hopes to save $8.9 million by closing the four companies overnight.
The companies cover parts of lower Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn and the Bronx. The department says trucks from other companies can still get there in time because overnight traffic is light.
