Tree Falls on Toursits in Central Park

NEW YORK (WCBS)  -- Two tourists visiting from Austrialia were struck by the branches of a falling tree in central park today while they were getting their portraits done.  Melanie Ciancio and Brooke Spagnolo were knocked to the ground but weren't seriously hurt.

They came to New York to celebrate Melanie's 30th birthday and decided to stop in Cental Park before going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  The two women say they were impressed at how quickly passers by and EMS officials arrived to help.

The tree was located along a path near the Central Park Zoo.  Witnesses say the falling tree narowly missed hitting a baby boy in a stroller.  Park officials say the tree was about 50 years old and believe it fell due to the wet soil.
