Fresh Drinks In A Classy Setting

Slewis@wcbs880.com

NEW YORK (WCBS)  -- The best bars have no signs, or at least subtle ones. On 17th street between 5th and 6th avenues, below the Chelsea Inn, there's a small, understated plaque that reads: Raines Law Room. You don't have to be Madonna to get in, but it may behoove you to dress nicely. Inside you'll find little groups of black leather furniture, a fireplace, and next to each section a buzzer that rings the servers when you want another drink.

Classy is the word for this place. A great venue to impress a client, a date, or your rich Uncle. The bartenders were hand-picked from over 100 applicants, and every drink is made from fresh ingredients. The sidecar I had was so good I could've downed five of them. Served in antique glasses, nothing you will order here is going to have added sugar. Maybe fresh fruit, but as the manager Paul told me, "We do not have cranberry juice."

Fresh drinks, subtle signs, and waiters on command. What else do you need?
