New York (WCBS880) -- Throughout the month of June, Grand Central's Oyster Bar invites you to enjoy a unique Dutch delicacy: herring! The Holland Herring Festival runs through June 29th, and feature the freshest Dutch herring this side of the Atlantic!
The young fish are hatched in the waters of the Netherlands, and Oyster Bar receives the first batch shipped to the United States. The fresh fillets are perfectly flavored and incredibly tender, and are as soft and smooth as butter going down. (A Dutch couple I spoke to at Oyster Bar said they taste exactly like the herring they had in their hometown of Rotterdam!) Oyster Bar serves them from a traditional Dutch cart with chopped onions, boiled egg, and chives as condiments. At $7 a fillet or $7.95 for a herring salad, it's as much fish as you'd get in your lunchtime serving of sushi, but you don't have to bother with chopsticks, or any other utensils for that matter: the proper way to eat Dutch herring is with your hands! Just grab it by the tail, dangle it in front of your month, and lean in for a bite!
