NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Finding fresh fruits and vegetables in New York City may not be as difficult as it once was. Beginning today, more than 200,000 daily commuters and residents will be able to pick and choose from some of the freshest organic produce in the city, as well as baked goods, condiments, soups and sandwiches.
LISTEN as WCBS 880's reporter Paul Murnane was able to experience the fresh produce, as well as the neighborhood's first reactions earlier today.
"We've been working hard to make this world-class facility a part of this world-class neighborhood, and at the same time to provide a more customer-friendly experience for the traveling public. This market is a first for this signature building and will be a key neighborhood resource and an important amenity for those who commute each day by bus," said Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward.
Katchkie Farm in Kinderhook, NY along with Prospect Hill Orchard in Milton, NY are the two local farms that provide everything to make this a success. The market hopes to later add more vendors and even local wines to the mix.
Not only is this a remarkable achievement for local food businesses, but also it will help make the local community a bit healthier.
“We are thrilled to partner with Port Authority on the Bus Terminal Greenmarket. Our network of Greenmarket farmers markets has expanded to include 50; a remarkable achievement for the local food movement. Greenmarket is one of the ways we work alongside residents to create a healthy living environment in New York City,” said Executive Director Marcel Van Ooyen from the Council on the Environment of New York City.
To experience The Greenmarket for yourself head over to the North Wing at the Port Authority at Eighth Avenue and 42nd Street, and will be open every Thursday from 8 a.m to 6 p.m.
