NEW YORK (AP)  -- Former Mayor Ed Koch is said to be recovering well from open heart surgery he had last week. He's even asking for ice cream.

Spokesman George Arzt said Monday that Koch sat up for the first time, and is making conversation.

He says the former mayor's famous sense of humor also is back.

Koch underwent a quadruple bypass and valve replacement surgery [WCBS 880] last Friday.

The 84-year-old served as mayor from 1978 to 1989.
