The 411 Stories of the Day - Thursday, June 25, 2009

BERNANKE...
(CBS) - The House Oversight & Government Reform Committee hears from Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke regarding Bank of America's acquisition of Merrill Lynch last year. It is expected that members of both parties will give the Fed chairman a very tough time. The Committee has seen documents suggesting he had a major role in forcing the B of A-Merrill Lynch merger, even after the bank wanted to back out and other government regulators were worried about it.

SANFORD...
(AP) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford describes the Argentine woman with whom he was having an affair as a ``dear, dear friend'' whom he has known for about eight years. He apologized to his family yesterday and gave up a national Republican Party post. At least one state lawmaker is calling for his resignation. His spokesman says Sanford has ``no plans'' to resign.

STEM CELLS/MUSCLES...
(CBS) - Embryonic stem cells are getting a lot of attention from researchers working to find breakthrough treatments for muscle disorders and injuries. However, one new study found genes important for muscle development in the embryo are unnecessary to repair damaged muscles later in life, so the Holy Grail for treating adults may turn out to be adult stem cells, not embryonic cells.

SNAKES...
(CBS) - What are the chances of walking out your back door and into the deadly clutches of a huge python? In Florida they're on the rise -- as the state's population of Burmese pythons continues to grow. Many are now wondering just how far north these giant snakes will slither.
