NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City - adhering to the letter of the law - has reappointed a board of education amid the state Senate chaos. But nearly all of the new board members favor mayoral control of the schools.
Gov. David Paterson ordered lawmakers into a special session Tuesday night to take up time-sensitive bills. They included mayoral control of the schools, which expired at midnight. State lawmakers left for the night without addressing the issue.
On Wednesday, the city's five borough presidents met with Mayor Michael Bloomberg to appoint a school board. The only member opposing mayoral control is from the Bronx.
The board scheduled a meeting at noon.
Summer school opened as planned on Wednesday.
