CT Gov. Rell Vetoes Dem's Budget Proposal
|
HARTFORD, CT (AP) -- Gov. M. Jodi Rell, as promised, has vetoed the Connecticut Democrats' budget proposal, saying it's not balanced or realistic.
Rell's veto Wednesday comes as she meets privately with legislative leaders at the executive residence about a new two-year tax and spending plan. The new fiscal year has begun without a budget in place.
Rell on Tuesday signed an executive order that covers $1.3 billion in essential general fund spending and $110,000 in transportation for July.
The Republican governor and the Democratic-controlled General Assembly have been at odds for months over how to cover the two-year deficit, predicted to be as much as $8.8 billion.
Rell says no tax increases are needed while the Democrats have proposed raising taxes on wealthy taxpayers and corporations.
