NEWARK, NJ (AP) -- A police pursuit ended with an officer opening fire in New Jersey's largest city early Thursday.
Police say the pursuit began in Belleville and moved into Newark, where authorities say a Belleville police offcer who was struck by the vehicle opened fire.
The pursuit came to a halt after the vehicle struck a tree at Broad and Clay Streets.
One suspect was arrested after a short chase and the other was removed from the vehicle with a head injury. It's not known if the injury was the result of the crash or the officer's shooting.
Police say the Belleville officer was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
