Widening Project Begins on NJ Turnpike

EAST WINDSOR, N.J. (AP)  -- Motorists on the New Jersey Turnpike face more pain before they gain from a widening project.

Ground will be broken Thursday on the $2.5 billion project. But motorists will face delays until the work is completed by 2014.

A 25-mile segment north of Mansfield will be doubled to 12 lanes to extend the configuration for car and truck lanes that exists north of it.

A 10-mile segment south of East Brunswick will be expanded from 10 lanes to 12.

Along with reducing congestion, Gov. Jon Corzine says the project will also provide an economic stimulus.
