Suspect Escapes After Police Shootout in Paterson
|
PATERSON, NJ (AP) -- A man being pursued on foot by two Paterson police officers escaped after exchanging gunfire with them early Friday.
The officers were not injured in the shootout in the northern New Jersey community, but it was not known whether the suspect _ armed with a handgun _ was struck.
Lt. Donald Giaquinto, a police spokesman, said the man fired two shots at Terry Duffy Jr., a veteran member of the force, and Camilo Suriel, a rookie officer, during the pursuit that began around 3:30 a.m., not far from Paterson police headquarters.
The officers then fired more than a dozen rounds altogether at the man, who soon fled the scene. The reason for the pursuit was not immediately disclosed.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's office will review the incident, which is standard policy for police-involved shootings.
