Nike's latest version of its Air Force 1 sneakers pays homage to Long Island's landmark Jones Beach.
The sand-colored canvas and leather shoe features the Jones Beach water tower on the tongue. A map of Long Island is emblazoned on the light-blue sole. Inside is the phrase "Strong Island.''
The Air Force 1 model was the first to feature cushioned, inflatable pouches in the heel.
Built in 1929, Jones Beach State Park draws some 6 million people annually to its 6.5 miles of ocean beach and 2-mile boardwalk.
Parks spokesman George Gorman called the citation "a terrific honor for a world-class facility.''
Nike only made 516 pairs of the shoe, an homage to Long Island's area code and the shoe quickly sold out at most retailers.
