Man Critically Wounded in NYPD Shooting

NEW YORK (AP)  -- New York City police say an officer has shot a man who confronted officers with a loaded handgun, and the man is in critical condition.

The man's identity was not immediately released. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital after the shooting shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday in the South Bronx.

Police say officers were chasing the 47-year-old man when they spotted his loaded .380-caliber handgun.

Police say the man ran back toward the officers, and one of them shot him in the torso, left arm and right hand.

Police say the man's handgun was recovered at the scene.

It wasn't immediately clear why police initially began chasing him.
