State to Keep Eye on NY Brook after Chlorine Spill

NANUET, NY (AP)  -- Environmental officials say they'll monitor a suburban New York waterway for any signs of long-term ecological damage after hundreds of gallons of chlorine spilled at a nearby apartment complex.

State Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman Mike Knipfing says some dead fish have been spotted along Nauraushaun Brook since the spill Friday in Nanuet.

Fire trucks sprayed water into the brook to dilute the chemical, used to disinfect swimming pools. Knipfing says officials will determine whether any more steps are needed.

The chemical leaked from a hose while being delivered to the Normandy Village complex. Various officials estimate that between 200 and 500 gallons spilled.

Fumes prompted the evacuation of nearby Lake Nanuet Park.
