Holiday Weekend Ends without NY Senate Deal

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)  -- New York's Senate has adjourned again after meeting in yet another extraordinary session called by Gov. David Paterson.

But no bills were debated or passed in Sunday's three-minute session.

Two Senate factions continue to refuse to recognize each other's leaders and so no legislation action was made on critical bills, including some of which would extend laws that expired during the standoff.

The Senate has been gridlocked since a June 8 coup by a Republican-dominated coalition over the Democratic conference.

The Senate is now evenly split after one of the dissidents defected back to the Democratic conference. Action on critical bills has been stymied for weeks.

Senators' staffs are trying to negotiate a compromise.
