The increase was approved in the state's new budget and begins this month. Advocates for the poor say the hike is long overdue.

For a typical family of three, the total goes from $291 a month to $321, a difference of $30. For a family of four, it goes from $375.70 a month to $413.70, a difference of $38.

The subsidy also will increase incrementally in 2010 and 2011.
