Forced Clean Up of a "Disgusting" Home

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. -- A Long Island home has been a dangerous eyesore to the community for too long, prompting the town of North Hempstead to finally take action.

The house, at the end of Holly Lane in New Cassel, is strewn with garbage and crawling with fleas, spiders, mosquitos and rodents. Squatters have also taken up residence in the abandoned home, gaining access through various holes in the ground.

WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall spoke with a neighbor who chose to remain anonymous.

"When are they going to fix it? When are they going to clean it up? It is also dangerous for the little kids, somebody is going to get hurt," she said.

The township has had enough. They are cleaning up the property and billing the owners, who are believed to have fled to North Carolina. The estimated cost of clean-up is said to be at least $20,000.
