The same day we learned that vandals broke into a Hispanic church in Patchogue and wrote white supremacist messages on the walls inside, the Southern Poverty Law Center is releasing a report concluding that Latinos are routinely targeted with violence in Suffolk County.

SPLC director Mark Potok says elected officials and community leaders have contributed to the problem.

Potok says, "We found that the politicians - the people who really should have been looking out for the residents of Suffolk County, all of the residents of Suffolk County - in many cases..really worsened the situtation very substantially."

The report documents dozens of attacks on immigrants over recent months and concludes that widespead violence against immigrants has created a climate of fear in Suffolk County.
