Teenage Bomb Maker on Long Island Had Photos of Columbine Killers
NORTH BABYLON, NY (AP / WCBS 880) -- Police on Long Island say a teenager was injured when a homemade explosive went off in his basement. The victim had pictures of the 1999 Columbine massacre on the back of his bedroom door, but authorities have not determined why he was making a bomb.
The boy was taken to a hospital by his parents following the explosion on Monday night. Police say he was using gunpowder taken from his father's bullets to make a bomb. His father is a retired law enforcement officer.
The boy, whose hand was injured, was described as having a history of emotional problems.
The incident prompted North Babylon school officials to declare a modified lockdown on Tuesday. A statement on the school Web site said officials conducted a backpack search of all students as a precaution.
Security was back to normal at the high school on Wednesday.
