Long Island School District May Ban Cupcakes and Other Treats

NEW YORK (WCBS 880)  -- There could be a ban on baked goods at one Long Island school district.

You may remember your mom or dad bringing birthday cupcakes or cake to your first grade class, the West Babylon School District is considering a ban on any outside snacks. Instead, they would only allow healthy packaged goods.

WCBS Reporter Sophia Hall talks with one mother of two who thinks it's a bad idea.

"This is actually against their rights to make choices. If you're forcing them to only eat what you tell them to eat, then they don't learn how to make the correct decisions," said one mom.

But, what about the parents who worry about food allergies?

"I don't know if most people know this, but they tell us to not bring peanut butter and jelly to school already, and they sell peanut butter and jelly every day in the cafeteria. And those kids with the peanut allergies ar in there eating," said one mom.

Newsday reports snacks shall either meet the nutrition guidelines set by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation or the New York State Nutrition Association's Choose Sensibly guidelines. Items on the association's guidelines include snacks such as baked chips, fruit pops made with real fruit, trail mix without nuts, low-fat pudding or animal crackers.
