With just over a week until Election Day, Christie was asked where his campaign stands. He said, "We're in a very, very good position right now. After Jon Corzine has spent over $25 million attacking us all summer, uh, we are right in the lead in this race. About two points ahead with a week to go, and we intend to close the deal this week."
Christie brushed off the fact that he once had a double-digit lead and attributed the tightening poll numbers to the launch of Governor Jon Corzine's ad blitz, which Christie called "smear" and the fact that the state does have more Democrats than Republicans. He also said, "The fact that a Republican is in the lead with eight days to go tells you about the power of the message that we're putting out to the state of New Jersey."
Christie commented on the big names coming out to campaign for Corzine, such as President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton. He called it the "Jon Corzine Save Him from Himself Tour" and added that "when all these folks come in and campaign, they get on the plane and leave and if you vote for Jon Corzine, we're gonna be stuck with him and we can't afford another four years of Jon Corzine."
Christie responded to the New York Post's endorsement that also stated disappointment that Christie hadn't spelled out details of his tax-cutting plan. He said, "I've made very clear what my priorities are going to be. We've said we'll roll back the income tax in the first year. We've said we'd restore property tax rebates in the first year and then we would look for further income tax cuts and corporate business tax cuts over the next three years. I think that's pretty specific."
Christie said he isn't affraid of independent candidate Chris Daggett eating into his support, saying "I know that...I'm the only person in this race who is talking about cutting spending and cutting taxes. Mr. Daggett's plan is to raise taxes $4 billion and to continue to increase spending. That sounds very much like Governor Corzine's plan and I think that when the voters are down to making their final decision, they're going to want the person that's going to cut wasteful spending and cut taxes in Trenton, not one of the two people who are going to raise taxes and raise spending."
When asked about his plans for the final week of the campaign, Christie said, "Besides no sleep and being - hopefully being - on the radio and TV a lot to communicate my message, we're going to be getting on a campaign bus on Wednesday. [Former] Governor Whitman will be campaigning with me this week. Former Governor Kean, former [New York City] Mayor Giuliani will be campaigning with me in the next week. So, we'll get on the bus Wednesday. We're going to have a lot of guests coming in to help us close this out and I'll be traveling to all 21 counties in New Jersey in the last six days of the campaign."
Finally, Christie commented on the so-called 'Amtrak Series' between the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies, saying "I'm a north Jersey guy. So, I'll be pulling for the Yankees."
