Juvenile Detention Facility in Connecticut Put on Hold
|
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Plans to allot $15 million for a juvenile detention facility in Bridgeport have been put on hold.
The State Bond Commission, which is chaired by Gov. M. Jodi Rell, removed the item from its agenda Friday. The decision came amid vocal opposition from various officials, including the Bridgeport legislative delegation, who claim the planned facility had been thrusted upon the neighborhood.
Robert Genuario, Rell's budget director, says the commission decided to put the funding on hold because some members, who are supportive of the project, wanted to give Bridgeport residents and officials more time to review the documentation.
Connecticut has not had a secure facility for troubled girls since the Long Lane School in Middletown closed in February 2003.
