The name Woodland Park is leading over West Paterson 2,226 to 2,197 votes. However, provisional ballots, which could tip the balance, will not be counted for several days.
Voters narrowly passed a referendum last November to change the Passaic County town's name from West Paterson to Woodland Park. The new name took effect on New Year's Day.
The Committee to Save West Paterson gathered enough signatures to place the question on Tuesday's ballot. Those who wanted to change back said they took pride in the town's old name.
Supporters of Woodland Park said the name would improve the town's image, separating it from urban Paterson.
