When the major chains report their October sales figures today the news is expected to be reasonably good - and that may offer hope for the holiday season ahead.

(AP) - The House could vote as early as today on a Senate-passed bill to extend unemployment benefits and expand a homebuyer tax credit. The bill passed the Senate with a 98-0 vote yesterday.
HEALTH CARE REFORM...
(CBS) - The 40-million member AARP holds a news conference today to announce its endorsement of the Democratic-sponsored health care bill before the House. Also, several of the nation's best-known civil rights organizations are combining forces to lobby for health care reform. The NAACP and the National Urban League are among the groups. Meanwhile, with leaders of the Tea Party Express on Capitol Hill today in their quest "to defeat Nancy Pelosi's government-run, socialistic healthcare plan," several Republican members of Congress hold a news conference today to urge that the voices of their constituents be heard in the health care debate.
