City Officials Launch Weekend H1N1 Vaccination Centers for Students

NEW YORK (NYC HEALTH DEPT.) -- Health, school, and emergency management officials will gather today to launch the beginning of New York City’s effort to provide free H1N1 influenza vaccine to middle and high school students in all five boroughs. Weekend vaccination clinics will continue over five weekends in November and December. Each weekend vaccination center is designed to accommodate up to 500 people per hour and will be open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. People seeking vaccination will receive numbered tickets to secure their places in line. Once a center has given out the available tickets for one day, it will close its lines and encourage others to return the next day or visit another weekend clinic. Anyone holding a number will be vaccinated on the day it was issued.

In addition to middle and high school students, the weekend vaccination centers will also serve elementary school students (ages 4 and older) who have not been vaccinated in their schools or at their doctors’ offices. Anyone under 18 must present a signed parental consent form and anyone under 16 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

To prevent overcrowding and long lines, City officials are asking parents to find the date and location of the vaccination center nearest their home, and voluntarily use that site on the appropriate weekend. Parents with computer access can find their designated weekend site by typing their zip code into the locator at nyc.gov/flu. Schedules and locations are also available through 311.
