All Lanes Reopen on I-691

MERIDEN, CT (AP)  -- State police have reopened all lanes of Interstate 691 in the Meriden area after cleaning up two different tractor-trailer accidents that snarled the morning commute.

Troopers say they closed both westbound lanes in Southington near exit 4 for several hours Tuesday morning after a truck driver swerved to avoid a deer and the vehicle burst into flames after hitting a bridge abutment at about midnight.

The truck was destroyed, and the driver was brought to a hospital with upper body and arm injuries.

The second accident happened at about 3 a.m. in the eastbound lanes between exits 4 and 5 in Meriden, when a tandem truck swerved and hit a guardrail. The driver suffered head and neck injuries. The cause remains under investigation.

Neither driver has been ticketed.
