The remnants of Tropical Storm Ida caused widespread problems in Virginia and the Carolinas before hitting the Jersey shore Friday and eroding beaches.
But bridges into Ocean City and Wildwood, N.J., reopened by mid-afternoon after being closed for much of the day because of flooding.
About 100 people went to temporary centers set up at Ocean City High School and a recreation center in Wildwood because their neighborhoods were flooded. All had returned to their homes by 1 p.m.
No mandatory evacuations were necessary in New Jersey. Meanwhile, thousands of people remained without power to the south.
Drowning in NYC
A man surfing at a New York City beach died after getting caught in pounding surf churned up by a passing tropical storm.
A fire department spokesman says two firefighters responding to an emergency call Thursday pulled the man out of the waters off Rockaway Beach in Queens.
Emergency medical technicians attempted to revive the
36-year-old surfer, but he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His name was not immediately released.
The spokesman says it appears the lone surfer was in the water alone when the leg strap that tethers the surfboard to his ankle became tangled and the rough surf pushed him toward a jetty.
