Trump's Jones Beach Restaurant will be 'Green'

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Donald Trump's plan for an oceanfront restaurant and banquet hall on Long Island's Jones Beach will include energy efficiency measures and environmental protections, the developer and state officials announced Wednesday.
Trump agreed his ``Trump on the Ocean'' at Jones Beach State Park will use some of the most recent advances in environmental technology, said state Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Carol Ash.
The state and Trump reached agreement to participate in the ``Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design'' program. Created by the nonprofit U.S. Green Building Council, the program helps developers support human and environmental health through water savings, energy efficiency, the selection of materials and indoor air quality.
``Jones Beach is a rare jewel, and we will do everything we can to keep it beautiful and eco-friendly in addition to building the best facility of its kind anywhere in the world,'' Trump said in a statement.
The building will also comply with the state's ``Green Building Initiative'' for energy efficiency and will be compatible with its surroundings. Under the agreement, the state parks department has the right to approve designs.
In April, the state granted Trump an unusually generous state lease. ``Trump on the Ocean'' will pay less, in percentage terms, than any other major state parks concession, Newsday reported. The Trump development's 40-year lease also is longer than any other state parks contract except the one for the Maid of the Mist boat ride at Niagara Falls, according to the newspaper.
Set on five acres at the popular beach, Trump on the Ocean would afford sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. The facility is to feature indoor and beachfront dining and handle large-scale events with as many as 1,400 people. It would replace the Boardwalk Restaurant, which was demolished more than two years ago.
Construction is expected to start soon on the project, which Trump has said will cost $40 million.
