Jury Hears Summations in New Jersey Corruption Trial

NEWARK, N.J. (AP)  -- Attorneys in the first trial stemming from New Jersey's largest federal corruption sting are offering jurors their interpretation of the evidence.

Suspended Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini faces six charges of bribery and extortion.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra Moser told jurors Monday that meetings secretly taped by a federal informant show that Beldini knew what she was doing when she discussed campaign contributions in exchange for help with a building project.

In his summation, defense attorney Brian Neary attacked the informant, failed real estate speculator Solomon Dwek, who has pleaded guilty to a $50 million bank fraud.

Dwek spent five days on the witness stand during the trial.

Jurors will begin deliberating Monday afternoon.
