TIPS:
A. For the week-end athlete:
a) Work out within a healthy range, one way to do this is being able to maintain a conversation while exercising, without feeling short of breath.
b) If you have painful hips, knees, ankles or back; choose a soft track instead of pavement and walk rather than jog.
B. Most humans will experience an episode of back pain that will resolve spontaneously, during their life time. The following are some warning signs that require a doctors evaluation:
a. Pain traveling down the legs.
b. Legs getting numb or tingly.
c. Pain that wakes you up at night.
d. Pain that gets worse when lying down.
e. Pain associated with fever and/or weight loss.
C. If you work with your hands (computers, assembling small parts, hair dresser, etc.) you are at risk for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Symptoms of CTS include:
a) Hand pain at night
b) Waking up with numb or tingly hands.
c) Loosing hand/grip strength, i.e.: unable to close a faucet shut.
D. To avoid back injuries, observe proper body mechanics:
a. When bending to pick-up objects, flex your knees.
b. Carry heavy objects close to your body, avoid carrying with outstretched arms.
E. To avoid neck, back and hand strains or injuries at the office, an ergonomic work station is recommended:
a) Computer monitor placed at eye height.
b) Arm supports, to allow forearms to rest, with elbows flexed 90 degrees.
c) Wrists supported and aligned with the forearms.
d) Lumbar support on your chair.
E. To avoid neck strain resist holding the telephone between you ear and shoulder, use your hand or a head-set.
F. If you have a weak or painful lower extremity, use the following rule when negotiation steps: Going up, the good leg steps up first. Going down, the weak/painful leg steps down first. To remember this think: good leg goes to heaven, bad one goes to hell. Always use the handrail if available.
G. Aqua-Therapy is the best choice for exercising a painful/arthritic body. The buoyancy of water provides a weight-reduced environment for painful joints to be moved and muscles conditioned.
H. To counter-balance stress:
a. Practice MEDITATION for 3 to 5 minutes, two or three times daily.
I: Anger and hatred are great sources of stress which in turn weaken your immune system, to counter these feelings, exercise patience and compassion with all those you interact daily. |
