NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- It started with just one police officer who followed his nose to the largest pot busts in New Jersey history
WCBS reporter Levon Putney talks with Monroe Township officer Thomas Lucasiewicz who says something just didn't smell right.
"I noticed the smell of marijuana coming through my vents in the vehicle," said Lucasiewicz.
He got out and searched to find the smell coming from a nearby house chimney.
"Yes, apparently they were burning the stalks in the chimney to get rid of them," said Lucasiewicz.
He says they knocked, the suspects let them in, and once inside busted a high-tech indoor growing operation, five houses were being used.
Over 3,000 growing plants and 115 pounds of harvested marijuana have been seized so far in Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean Counties in New Jersey.
In all, investigators say $10 million worth of pot was found.
"Make no mistake about it, this is big business," said State Attorney General Paula Dow.
There are arrest warrants for six people.
