Boil Water Advisory in Parts of New Jersey After Latest Powerful Storm

TEANECK, NJ (WCBS 880/AP)  -- A boil water advisory has been issued in a number of New Jersey communities following the big weekend storm.

For customers in Fort Lee, Cliffside Park, Englewood Cliffs, and Fairview who were without any water on Sunday and Monday, service has been restored.

Many, however, still need to boil their water. United Water had this update on Tuesday morning:

United Water New Jersey’s precautionary boil water advisory for customers in 18 communities in Bergen and Hudson counties remains in place until further notice.

United Water’s customers in Alpine, Carlstadt, Cliffside Park, Dumont, Emerson, Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Hasbrouck Heights, Hillsdale, Northvale, North Bergen, Palisades Park, Paramus, Ridgefield, Tenafly, Teaneck, Union City and Washington Township have to boil their water for one minute for the following: drinking, cooking or baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula or food, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets and all other consumption. Water does not have to be boiled for the following activities: showering, washing dishes or clothes.

Yesterday, laboratory personnel began testing water samples throughout the system to ensure that it meets safe drinking water standards. Test results typically take 24-48 hours.

For Middlesex Water Company customers, this update was posted Monday night:

Middlesex Water Company is reporting that the BOIL WATER ADVISORY that had been put in place March 14, 2010 has been lifted for the following towns only: Woodbridge, Carteret, Metuchen, South Amboy, Highland Park, Old Bridge and portions of South Plainfield and Edison served by Middlesex Water. We are pleased to report that tests for the municipalities mentioned above show the water quality to be safe and customers in those towns no longer need to boil water before using.

The following municipalities remain under a boil water advisory until water quality test results are received: Perth Amboy, Aberdeen, East Brunswick, South River, Spotswood and Helmetta. Middlesex Water will continue to update this website once we have received information from these local municipal water utilities that the Department of Environmental Protection has lifted the advisory. Those customers in municipalities still under the advisory should continue to boil their water for one minute for the following: drinking, cooking or baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula or food, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets and all other consumption.
