BOHEMIA, Long Island (AP) -- A Long Island company is taking another step of getting this country off of foreign oil. North American Bio-Fuels of Bohemia opens the first plant on Long Island that converts restaurant grease and frying oil into fuel for your car.
Up to now there are have been hundreds of stories of individuals using french fry oil from local fast food restaurants to power their diesel cars. People would clean the grease on their own and put it in their diesel engines. Gasoline cars can use the oil if they have a converter installed on their engine.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy says this takes waste grease and turns it into energy.
He adds besides reducing the countries reliance on foreign oil, it will help eliminate the illegal dumping of restaurant grease.
North American Bio-Fuels has partnered with a local liquid waste hauler to provide the grease. Besides the car fuel, the grease can be used for home heating oil.
